Don't throw away brown sugar that is hardened. Place a piece of fresh bread, together with the hardened brown sugar in a container. Cover tightly and leave it for a day or two. The sugar will be soft again. This method can also be used to prevent brown sugar from becoming hard and lumpy. Store brown sugar together with a piece of fresh bread. Change the bread once it gets hard.
